There is a moment in Sedona just after sunrise when the landscape begins to reveal itself one layer at a time. This view over Boynton Canyon captures that moment, with the morning light beginning to warm the enormous red rock walls while the canyon below remains covered in deeper greens and shadows.

The photograph was captured during the early morning hours of August 20, 2026, at approximately 6:50 AM. From above, Boynton Canyon takes on an entirely different scale. The cliffs that appear massive from the ground become part of an even larger system of ridges, valleys and formations extending toward the horizon.

What immediately stands out is the geology. Brilliant bands of red and orange stone form the lower cliffs, while higher sections transition into lighter layers of rock. Thousands upon thousands of years of erosion have exposed these formations, creating the vertical faces, alcoves and pillars visible throughout the photograph.

Below them, the canyon is unexpectedly green. Juniper, pinyon and other high-desert vegetation fill the valleys between the formations, creating a dramatic contrast against the red sandstone.

Boynton Canyon is also the setting surrounding Enchantment Resort, which sits at the base of the canyon and is known for being almost completely enclosed by Sedona’s red rock landscape. 

From this aerial perspective, the photograph tells a larger story than a single Sedona formation. It shows how these immense walls connect to one another and how quickly the landscape falls away into miles of rugged Arizona wilderness.

Fun Fact: Boynton Canyon is one of Sedona’s best-known box canyons, and the main trail travels deep between its towering walls. Near the beginning of the trail, Boynton Vista provides views back across the canyon and toward Enchantment Resort.
