Oak Creek Canyon is famous for its towering canyon walls, forests, and spectacular drive between Sedona and Flagstaff, but from high above, the road itself becomes part of the landscape.

This aerial photograph looks almost straight down onto the dramatic switchbacks of Route 89A as the roadway twists and doubles back through the forest. From ground level, each curve feels like another turn in a steep mountain drive. From the air, those individual turns suddenly come together, revealing an incredible pattern carved into the terrain.

The road snakes between dense stands of trees, disappearing beneath shadows before emerging again around another sweeping hairpin turn. The contrast between the dark pavement, green forest, exposed mountainside, and long shadows gives the photograph an almost three-dimensional quality.

It is a perspective most travelers never get to experience. Drivers concentrate on navigating one curve at a time, never seeing the remarkable engineering and natural landscape surrounding them as a single scene.

Oak Creek Canyon is already one of Arizona’s great scenic drives, but viewed from above, it becomes something entirely different — a winding ribbon through the mountains connecting Sedona’s red-rock country with the higher elevations around Flagstaff.

Route 89A climbs dramatically through Oak Creek Canyon on its way toward Flagstaff. Near the upper portion of the canyon, a series of tight switchbacks allows the highway to gain elevation without climbing directly up the steep mountainside. What feels like a succession of sharp turns from inside a vehicle becomes an extraordinary geometric pattern when viewed from the air.
